Most displays for Dasara “habba bomb” feature dolls and traditional toys bought in stores. Sridhar Ramu’s home at HSR Layout is

special – it features homemade dolls. This year’s exhibition is spread over an entire floor of his house in Sector 3. Sridhar, his mother Pankajam, his wife Chitra and his daughter Samhita discuss the topics every year and start working about 10 months in advance.

This year’s exhibit features a traditional five-stage setup, depicting stories about five deities. It also includes a miniature replica of Chennai Airport from 40 years ago. “My father-in-law had the airport made to scale by a carpenter and sent it to us. We added dolls and other items, ”says Sridhar, financial consultant.

A village scene features a temple, a school and a library. More than half of the display is handcrafted, while the other half is neatly organized. Pankajam, an 82-year-old man, buys the heads of the dolls in a shop in the Raja market and sources waste fabrics from sewing workshops.

“The heads are plastic, fabric and ceramic. She makes bodies with fabric and cotton. She researches their designs and I take impressions, ”he explains.

The family has explored a new theme every year for the past 18 years. “Visitors are curious about what’s new each year,” he says.
