Car Rendering on Vellum Tutorial Harvey Ettinger

STEP1: I start with my original drawing. I blow it up to fit my large Vellum pad and do an overlay. I draw all my line work very light with a ball point pen or a blue prisma color pencil.
|
|
STEP 2: I get my tires correct by using a large 80 degree ellipse. I draw in my tires to ensure my original sketch was correct and my proportions are ok. I also draw in the tires on the other side of the car at the same time. At the same time I work out where my marker colors are going to be. I
draw in my horizon line on each surface and figure where my flop will
be in the front and rear. See next picture for explanation. |

This view shows a section through the door of my car. The arrow shows how the light will hit the surface and with it I can determine where my dark colors are going and where my chalk will go later. If you look at the door you will see it rolls and the more roll in your
door surface the LOWER or horizon will be. This was always the hardest
part for me to learn but once I figured it out things got easier. As the
metal rolls down the door it will reflect what’s on the ground.
The top of the door will have direct light and the paper will do most
of the work . |
Harv's tip of the day: draw sections through your design and figure out where the sun is hitting. If you dont understand your own cars shape youll never be happy with your rendering. |
